"Dementia Friendly" Communities is an initiative of Aging Together as part of a greater movement both in Virginia and the country. Aging Together works under the umbrella of Dementia Friendly Central Virginia of which we are a member. Dementia Friendly Communities is intended for businesses to be comfortable and prepared when those living with dementia visit your organization. In return, you open up your business to a greater population who may find it difficult to participate in their communities and so have a propensity to stay home. It's a win-win.

The Dementia Friendly Initiative is a tremendous benefit to families dealing with dementia. As a caregiver for six years, I was always surprised at those that don’t understand dementia, even when told. The fact businesses in Culpeper are working to understand before being told is even better! My father sadly passed away in an out of state hospital. The nursing staff in his general unit just couldn’t grasp the accommodations he needed and left my family so frustrated. We kept saying, “he’d be better off at the many trained businesses in Culpeper than this hospital.” And it was true. The understanding gained through the simple 30-minute training will leave community members ready to welcome people with dementia. Sadly, we wished the hospital had the training but I am so glad the Culpeper area community members are signing up and completing this program.
