Librariesto Distribute Free at Home COVID-19 Test Kits
Fauquier Public and Orange County Public Libraries are partnering with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to distribute COVID-19 Antigen at-home test kits at no cost. Individuals can pick up a virtually-guided Abbott BinaxNow COVID-19 Antigen Card Home Test from the library, use it in the privacy of their home and receive digital test results in 15 minutes. The program is designed to increase access to COVID-19 testing, especially among rural, remote, under-resourced communities, and other vulnerable populations.
Omicron The United States designated Omicron a Variant of Concern on December 1, 2021, after the first confirmed case of Omicron was detected in the United States. Although the Omicron variant has been detected in 18 states, so far it has not been identified in Virginia. The current threat to the United States remains the Delta variant.
Does Omicron spread quicker than the Delta variant? Omicron likely spreads more easily (faster) than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus but we do not know how it spreads compared to Delta.
Does Omicron cause severe illness? We need more data to answer this question. So far the disease appears mild, but we have been tracking Omicron for less than two weeks.
Do vaccines work against the Omicron variant? The vaccines available in the United States are expected to prevent against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Vaccines remain a critical component to prevent illness.
Will current treatments work against Omicron? Common treatments used to suppress the overreaction of the immune system in persons severely sick will still be effective. Other treatments (monoclonal antibodies) may not be effective against Omicron. The best strategy is prevention. The CDC now recommends all individuals over the age of 18 to get a booster dose to help protect themselves from COVID-19.
Public health recommendations to control the spread of COVID-19 work for all variants: stay home if you are sick, wash your hands, wear your mask indoors, and get vaccinated or boosted.
As of December 6, 2021 all air passengers 2 years of age or older with a flight departing to the U.S. from a foreign country are required to show a negative COVID-19 viral test no more than 1 day before travel regardless of vaccination status (or provide documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days). You will find current travel advisories here: travel.state.gov.
Current guidelines have not changed for domestic travel, however the CDC recommends individuals delay travel until they are fully vaccinated, or implement additional recommendations before, during, and after travel as seen here.
